About Us

Chris Woodhead

Cognita's Chairman Chris Woodhead has over 35 years experience in education. He has taught English in grammar and comprehensive schools, lectured in education at Oxford University, and worked in senior posts in three Local Education Authorities. He ran the National Curriculum Council and the Schools Curriculum Assessment Authority before becoming Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Schools. He resigned from this post in November 2000. He is now a Professor of Education at the University of Buckingham and broadcasts and writes regularly on education policy.

Over the years Chris has championed the values that are important to millions of parents across the country. The basic skills of literacy and numeracy; a broad and balanced curriculum which challenges and excites all children; a secure, disciplined learning environment in which each child is known and valued: we do not, he believes, need to re-invent education for the 21st century. What we want is what concerned parents have always wanted: teachers who care equally about the subjects they teach and the children for whom they are responsible, who have the highest possible expectations of each and every one of their pupils, and who, obviously enough, can keep order and explain new ideas with a clarity and enthusiasm which captures a child's imagination.

It is these traditional virtues Chris promotes as Chairman of Cognita.
