A-level pupils at St Clare’s School in Porthcawl were celebrating today (Thursday 19th August) after pupils scored an outstanding 100% pass rate at A-level and an excellent 60% of grades at A/A*.
40% of candidates received a full complement of A/A* results and 80% of grades were between A*-C.
Amongst the A-level achievers at the School are three future students of Medicine, plus students of Veterinary Science and Zoology. They are joined by a variety of Accountants, Business Managers and Engineers.
Spanish students were celebrating again with all pupils attaining grade A. History scored an impressive range of A*-Bs and Mathematics boasted an 80% A/A* result.
Four A Levels
Three students took four A-levels this year and each of them achieved an impressive combination of A/A* grades.
- Aneela Khaliq who studied Spanish, Geography, Chemistry, and Biology, will go on to study Medicine at Birmingham University. Aneela is following in the footsteps of her brother who is also an ex-pupil of St Clare’s and who also went on to study Medicine. Aneela achieved a remarkable 2 A and 2 A* grades in Chemistry and Geography. Aneela has achieved these excellent results after gaining 10A* grades at GCSE.
- Gayaneh Shahbazian who studied Spanish, Biology, Chemistry and History will go on to study Zoology and Modern Languages at Manchester University after achieving an impressive 3 A grades and an A* in History. Gayaneh had previously achieved an excellent 9A*s at GCSE.
- Rhodri Martin will study Medicine in Cardiff University after gaining 3 A grades in Biology, Physics, Spanish and an A* in Chemistry. Rhodri’s brother is also an ex-pupil of St Clare’s and went on to study Medicine. Rhodri was also an outstanding GCSE student who gained 9A* grades in 2008.
Three A-levels
Other notable results include:
- Christian Wallis goes to Brighton University to study Architecture after gaining an A and 2 A*s but he will be deferring entry for a year to take his Master Yachtsman Certificate. Christian also achieved an A at AS Chemistry.
- Omer Khan’s results will get him into Cardiff University to study Accountancy. Omer gained 2 As and an A*. These excellent results add to his A at AS level Spanish.
- Chess Champion Julia Malec gained three A grades at A-level to accompany her 2 A grades at AS-level and intends to go to Imperial College in London to study Bio-medical Sciences.
- Alexandra Dunlop gained three As in Biology, Chemistry and Spanish and will go on to Leicester University to study Medicine.
- Joseph Whittle will go to Edinburgh University to study Veterinary Science after gaining three As.
- Brett Davies will join Durham University to study Business after gaining two As and a B grade as well as a C at AS-level.
- Michael Stuttaford will study Civil Engineering in Cardiff after gaining 2As and a B as well as a B and a C at AS-level.
- Singer Charlotte Skidmore will join the Guildhall in London to study Music after gaining an A and 2 Bs at A Level and a B at AS-level.
- Timothy Heard will join Swansea University to study Criminology after gaining two As and a C.
- Alice Kinder will study Fashion & Textiles in Nottingham after achieving 2As and a C.

‘I am delighted that so many of our pupils have achieved outstanding exam results that place St Clare’s amongst the best schools in Wales. Many of our pupils are going on to study at top universities all over Britain, an achievement which is a credit to the quality of teaching at the school and a credit to the hard work and dedication demonstrated by all the pupils’.
Catherine Barnard who retires as Head of the School this summer commented, “Congratulations to all the pupils who did so well in their A-levels this year. They are a credit to themselves, their families and their school.”
